All CPD courses are accredited by the Fire Industry Association (FIA) and worth 1 CPD each, with additional courses being added as we expand the subject matter.

1 Understanding wireless fire detection and the EN54-25 standard

A look at the growth of wireless fire detection systems, how they work and what standards are in place. We explore applications for wireless and hybrid, and how to add to existing systems as well as networks for much larger complex buildings. How does wireless technology work and how is it deployed? We examine the technology and how EN54-25 has driven changes.

2 Wireless fire detection for any system

The increasing use of wireless fire detection, as a primary choice, has led to the development of wireless gateways which can be used to extend existing systems. These can be used for almost any system, addressable, regardless of protocol or conventional. Using the technology of wireless, systems can be extended quickly, without disruption, at a much lower cost. We explore the range of options and look at real world examples.

3 Understanding EN54-23 & Visual Alarm Devices (VADS)

The EN54-23 standard has now been around for a few years, yet still challenges many on how to use and calculate coverage with Visual Alarm Devices. We also explore wireless VAD solutions making extensions or retrofits to almost any system even easier. This is an easy to appreciate module which makes designing VADs into a system easier and clearer.

4 What is Aspirating Smoke Detection?

An introduction to Aspirating Smoke detection which is becoming more universally implemented for areas where early detection is a pre-requisite. How does ASD work, where can it be used and what technology is available? We look at the way ASD discriminates between dust and smoke and the reliability which can almost eradicate unwanted alarms. We also discuss how to integrate into other systems for site wide coverage.

5 What is Linear Heat Detection? – An alternative route for fire detection

Linear Heat detection has been available for some years, but to many it remains an unknown or misunderstood technology. We look at the various option including digital and analogue, and how LHD can be used more effectively in challenging environments. This includes diverse applications including car parks, tunnels, warehousing along with many other areas where more traditional solutions are difficult to install and/or maintain.

6 Why use Beam Detection? – How it can be used and understanding the benefits

Beam detection can be used effectively in many applications. We look at the products available, the technology employed and the design parameters, along with what type of beam detection you may want to deploy. We explore the areas where beam detection can be used more effectively than point detection and the cost implications in terms of savings.

These modules will benefit both intermediate and advanced fire professionals but are also suitable for entry level introduction to fire detection solutions. During each seminar our presenter will determine the skill level of the audience and fine tune each presentation.

Each module will last up to one hour, approximately 40 minutes of presentation followed by up to 20 minutes of Q&A.

About the author

Ray Puttock is a fire protection professional with over 30 years’ experience and knowledge. Having worked for some of the largest and well-known companies, Honeywell Gent and ADT, Ray is now with EMS Carrier, leaders in the development and manufacture of wireless fire detection.

An active member of several FIA (Fire Industry Association) working groups, Ray has in depth experience and knowledge of fire safety and legislation as well as technical understanding of fire detection systems and standards. He is frequently called upon to engineer the best solutions to avoid potential problems and pitfalls, understanding current legislation, to implementing fire management programmes and processes.

Ray regularly writes and comments for industry related journals and has presented many seminars and training programmes to help grow awareness of responsibilities and the implementation of best practice.
